ABOUT THE SITE
This site now contains details of all the types of British unit known to have been a part of 21 Army Group. There are a surprising number of these as the list of contents below will show. 21 Army Group also contained Canadian, Polish, Czech, Belgian and Dutch units and these were organised and equipped much as were British units.
The units have been divided into four sections:
‘Headquarters’ includes a wide range of units from the huge 21 Army Group Headquarters to some very small and obscure ones
‘Arms’ include the units which have traditionally done the actual fighting. Included here are infantry, artillery and engineers.
‘Services’ include the wide variety of units which support the fighting arms. Major corps include the Royal Army Service Corps, Royal Ordnance Corps, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Royal Army Medical Corps. There are many more. Royal Signals are both an arm and a service and are found everywhere.
‘Others’ includes those units which stand outside 21 Army Group structure. They include the 2nd Tactical Air Force and Royal Navy units. Airborne forces are included here since they were not strictly a part of 21 Army Group, although they spent much time serving under it. Some Canadian units are also included as examples only.

SOME CONVENTIONS ADOPTED for the WAR ESTABLISHMENTS.
The information is as given in the original documents and largely conforms to the layout of those documents. However many of the original documents are in the form of complex tables which are difficult to reproduce with accuracy.
In most cases major units have a complete list of personnel, including a list of any attached personnel. Most then have a list of trades etc. In some cases, especially in smaller units, the lists are combined. A list of vehicles follows, and often a list of weapons.
To enable key personnel to be readily identified officers and warrant officers have an upper case first letter while other personnel do not.
For major units there follows an organisation table showing which the roles and personnel assigned to each vehicle. In many cases vehicles or personnel not belonging to the unit are shown in italics.
For each vehicle the following may be shown
The type of vehicle. A number to identify individual vehicles of the type.
The personnel carried in the vehicle.
The vehicles task or particular load.
Any wireless sets carried by the vehicle.
Any weapons carried by the vehicle (apart from personal weapons).
Any trailers or guns towed by the vehicle.
VEHICLES and EQUIPMENT.
Where vehicles and equipment are specific to a unit, or type of unit, it is described on the unit page. Vehicles and equipment which are in general service are described separately on the equipment pages. For convenience all known vehicles and equipment are listed on the equipment pages.
The original War Establishment documents rarely specify the precise vehicle. Where this is known it is shown on the relevant page. Otherwise the range of options are shown on the equipment pages. For example a 3ton 4 X 4 GS lorry could be of any of half a dozen makes and units would receive what was available at the time.

It is not always possible to be certain that an establishment was used in 21 Army Group but in general
Volume II establishment tables refer to divisional units.
Volume III establishment tables refer to corps and army units.
Volume IV establishment tables refer to line of communication and base units.
Volume VIII establishment tables refer to GHQ units and were largely superseded by Volume XIV tables.
Volume XIV establishment tables refer specifically to 21 Army Group units and will be relevant.
The War Establishment tables held by the PRO are generally bound in volumes each containing three months worth of tables. Dates used are when Notified in Army Council Instructions and not the effective date.
